And I have to say that this isn’t surprising, especially for Black women, considering the world that we live in. We’re constantly being told in some form or fashion that we are not good enough. We’re told both passively and boldly that our kinky coils and curls aren’t cute, that our melanin isn’t valuable, and our attitude is too much.

All it takes is one time to hear this, whether it be from tv, your colleagues, or your family before you start to believe it. This can cause you to doubt your value, diminish your confidence, and question your self worth. Low self esteem doesn’t just mean feeling down all the time, it can show up in various ways. You may find yourself trying to be perfect at everything and no matter what you achieve and how great it is, you still feel it’s not good enough. You may feel like you bring nothing to the table, even when you are the table.

These thoughts and behaviors can prevent you from living your best life and lead you to:

Believing (and accepting) that you’re not worthy

When you lack confidence in yourself you’ll find yourself accepting whatever life throws at you, even when you deserve better. 

Constantly trying to prove yourself

It can become both mentally and physically draining when you’re pulling out all the stops and trying to give 150% for even the smallest things in life.

Negatively impacting your relationships and sexual health

Yes, you read that right low self-esteem can impact your sexual health. If you’re not confident in your hair, your skin, and yourself how will others?

Imposter Syndrome

This is when you use your achievements to mask your insecurities. You may find yourself striving to be perfect, out of fear that failing at anything may reveal your true self, which you see as flawed.
